Next Thursday is “Talk Like A Pirate Day.” My Little Chefs and I thought it would be fun to make a piratey menu for the day and have a piratey activity. Walk the Plank Salmon is an easy recipe. I would say it is a quick recipe except for it has 30 minutes of marinade time. If you call a recipe that can be made in 1 hour quick then this is one of those.
Submerge your cedar planks in water for 30 minutes. You will need to start with a defrosted salmon or salmon fillets. Whether you buy it frozen and defrost it or buy it fresh that is your choice. In a small bowl, combine the ginger, garlic, maple syrup, soy sauce and black pepper. This is a great recipe for your Little Chefs to practice their measuring skills with wet and dry ingredients. Place the salmon in a shallow bowl and cover with the marinade for 30 minutes. If you are very careful you can try to flip the salmon to give both sides time to soak up those flavors.
Place the salmon on the cedar plank. You can see the yummy bits of goodness on top of the fish!
Now is the time for an adult to take over. Place the cedar planks on the preheated grill. Baste with the sauce a few times during the cooking. Cooking time depends on the size and thickness of your fish. When it flakes easily with a fork it is done.
If you do not cook on the BBQ you may cook this in the oven. Mix the ingredients the same way. Place each piece of fish on a large piece of foil, sprayed with nonstick spray. Spoon the sauce over the top (we do 3 Tbsp for each serving). Fold the foil into a packet. Let the fish marinade for 30 minutes. Put the fish into a preheated 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. If you like your fish with a little crust open the packets carefully just so the fish is exposed and put it under the broiler for 2 minutes. What I love about this method is the clean up is easy and the Sun Roasted Broccoli is cooked at the same temperature for the same amount of time as the fish!
Don’t forget the very delicious Cheesy Pull Apart Sourdough Bread as part of our Pirate Menu. Our Fantastic Thursday linky party has already begun! Come see what others have been doing and link up too! Tomorrow we will have a fun pirate activity to finish off Pirate Week!
