My kids have an event at school where they practice buying things in a different language. We have been involved in this the past 2 years. They are always looking for donations of keychains or similar small items that the kids would enjoy. One year a friend of my daughter made keychains. I thought it was a great easy craft because keychains are something kids can make and mine like putting them on their backpacks. We are going to create some different types of keychains for this school activity. To start out we are creating a pineapple keychain. If you don’t have an event like this at your school my kids are always on the lookout for gifts they can make for friends or siblings for birthdays. This would be great for that purpose as well.
DIY Pineapple Keychain
Supplies Needed:
- Perler beads
- Square Pegboard
- Crop-A-Dile (or something similar)
- Split key rings
Instructions:
- Gather 30 green, 21 brown, and 84 yellow beads.
- Turn your square board so that the corners are facing up and down and left and right. Basically it looks like a diamond.
- Using the picture place the beads in the same pattern.
- Follow the manufacturer’s recommended instructions for fusing the beads together. Mine said to cover the beads with their special paper and use an iron on top for a few seconds. Flip the pineapple upside down and repeat on this side.
- Immediately after fusing the beads on both sides place it under a heavy book or two until it cools. This will help it to lay flat instead of curling.
- Use a crop-o-dile or similar instrument and create a hole near the top of the leaves.
- Insert a key ring to make a keychain or a piece of twine or elastic depending on what you are doing with the pineapple and how much you want to spend on this project.
I made a pineapple using yellow with a light brown and made another with a orange-yellow with dark brown beads.
My favorite part is the design is small enough and simple enough that kids are able to complete this easy craft before they loose interest.
