Summer BBQ’s are in full swing!!! And Sunday night dinners, for most families have the traditional post roast and potatoes, not at our house – We prefer STEAK! We have seasoned and prepared our steaks all different ways, some turned out better than others. We wanted to find out for ourselves which way we prefer our stakes. That is when the Steak Challenge: Marinade vs Dry Rub began!
The Little Chefs started out with 2 identical steaks – well as close as identical as you can get, they both came from the same cow – and we know that because all our beef came from a quarter of a cow we bought. Little Chef E and Little Chef K where in charge of the marinade steak and Little Chef B was in charge of the dry rub steak.
We started off with a few lessons on the right ways to handle raw meat – since these recipes were going to be requiring a lot of that. The Little Chefs were ready with their instant hand soap dispenser on hand and at the sink!!
Little Chef E and Little Chef K made the Steak Marinade. Simple, ingredients – most that you will find you already have on hand – olive oil, soy sauce, minced (or fresh chopped) onion, brown sugar, lemon juice and salt and pepper. The Little Chefs did a great job mixing all the ingredients together. We then put the steak, covered, in the fridge for about 8 hours.
Next Little Chef B prepared the Dry Rub for the Steak. It was also very simple with mixing just a few ingredients to give it an awesome flavor! Garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, oregano, corn meal, paprika, celery seed, and parsley – those mixed together makes a killer steak rub!!! Little Chef B covered the steak with the rub, folded and sealed the edges with foil, and then also put that steak in the fridge for about 8 hours.
The Steak Challenge: Marinade vs Dry Rub was really fun for the Little Chefs. They could not wait to test and try the different steaks! The results were in – the winning steak…….Marinade!! Not by much though, they LOVED both steaks – both were juicy, both were full of flavor! I think the Little Chefs just prefered the sweet soy, with a hit of citrus flavors better with their steak! This was a fun dinner Challenge which resulted in a delicious dinner!!! For a delicious side to add to these yummy steaks try out Baked Mashed Potatoes or our Orange Fruit Dip (perfect addition for a summer BBQ!).
